Ivan Sim

Ivan Sim is a Malaysian-born, American-based photographer. He came to America to explore new frontiers, leaving behind his beautiful home—Penang Island. As a young boy, he loved to take pictures with his dad’s old, analog camera. But, film isn’t free, so it was quite a treat when his dad would actually give him free reign with the camera; and, to Ivan, those rare times were truly a blessing.

After college, Ivan started working as an engineer. During that time, he bought himself his first camera – a digital compact point-and-shoot. It soon became apparent that not only had he developed quite a love of capturing moments and beauty with the camera, but he was also quite good at it! Many of his photos were posted to social media sites dealing with photography and Ivan received accolades and encouragement from many professional photographers. It was such compliments and encouragement that pushed him to pursue his passion for photography, and he took the next step to a professional DSLR camera.

In the months that followed, Ivan spent many hours capturing the beauty of the moments he lived. Whether he was taking travel pictures in the numerous parts of the world he’s visited, or simply immortalizing images of life on the streets of his hometown, it seemed that Ivan and his camera had become one. The quality, beauty, and original and unique perspective of his pictures certainly did not go unnoticed and it wasn’t long before he was solicited to photograph a wedding. The engagement was a great success and soon that one wedding became two, which became four, and so on. Before he knew it, he was moonlighting as a wedding and event photographer.

Over time, Ivan's photography expanded beyond wedding photos. In both the United States and Malaysia, Ivan has done work in many different arenas: Fashion, corporate portraits, sessions with musicians and bands (live gigs and in-studio), food photography for publication, and other event coverage, such as corporate and family events.

Ivan has a capture-the-moment style of photography, breaking down the moments we experience into still frames that tell the story of what happened and evoking the emotions of the moment. He has the ability to capture an image or event from interesting and creative perspectives, often times turning the seemingly-dull or mundane into a thing of beauty and meaning. Ivan goes to great lengths to get the right shot, while still respecting the dignity of the ceremony or event. In the end, you’re left with images of your special day or event that you can not only see, but feel.

Ivan’s delivery is multi-faceted, with get-it-right-the-first-time photography, meticulously touched-up final images, and follow-up service that ensures a complete and satisfactory experience. He works with the client to ensure their wants and needs are met, while providing them with new ideas and perspectives. A major key to Ivan’s success has been an honest, customer-oriented and service-oriented approach with the end result being a product the client loves, delivered on time. For the past 11 years, Ivan Sim Photography has worked with a very diverse clientele, from many different walks of life, countries and cultures, earning numerous rave reviews.
